Essential Interior Design Tips Before Relocating To A New Home

Moving homes can undoubtedly be one of the most stressful events in life. The process can feel overwhelming, no matter how organized you are, from packing up your belongings to transporting and unpacking them. Add in the desire to refresh or redesign your new home’s interiors, and the challenge becomes even more stressful.

Having experienced moving from one country to another and working with several clients who have relocated from overseas or state-to-state, I have learned best practices to help with a smoother transition from home to home.

Planning

The very first thing you need to do is take stock of your current furnishings. I highly recommend photographing and measuring each piece you intend to keep. Dispose of any unwanted items before the move. However, don’t eliminate essential furniture that may be needed in those first few months while waiting for new furniture to arrive. Ordering the right pieces can take a little time. So I recommend keeping the beds, dining tables, and main sitting pieces in family rooms.

Here is an important detail: measure the rooms in the new home to ensure your old furniture will fit. I have often seen this when someone can’t fit the room’s sectional, dining table, etc. Don’t rely on rough real estate measurements either.

Knowing how much you want to invest

Knowing how much you want to invest further in your home for your interior design project is essential. While having a big home may seem wonderful, you need to consider expenses such as furniture, decor, painting, flooring, and any renovations or upgrades in your home you want to make. Be sure to allocate funds for unexpected expenses that may arise during the moving process. If your funds don’t allow for everything to be done all at once, you may want to consider putting your project in phases.

Questions to ask yourself should be. What are the most important rooms that need priority over others? What can you live with a little while longer?

Design Aesthetic

You will want to see if the old design style goes with the new design style you desire. If it doesn’t, relax and have fun with this, start pinning ideas; if you want some, check the Marker Girl Pinterest Boards. Also, pin the photo of the room in the same folder. It will help you see what you want and how it will look in your new home.

Take your Time

Don’t impulse buy either while you are still not there. Many people say things like – I thought the walls were grey, and my sofa color didn’t work. Wait for furniture that needs to be customized that you will be happy with and not settle for what is available right now (delivered today). Living for an extra few months with old, mismatched furniture is far better than living with a purchase you have been unhappy with for a long time.

Hiring an Interior Designer might be your best move!

By involving an interior designer early on, you ensure a smoother transition into your new home. They can assess your current furniture, decor, and layout and provide valuable insights on what will work best in your new space. And, if you are doing any remodeling before you actually move to the designated city, having someone on the ground working on things before you get there is priceless.
