Marker Girl 2025 : Make Your Mark At Home

I am ready to kick off the year by helping you Make Your Mark on your home. Whether you’re dreaming about sprucing up your space or planning a big renovation, I want to guide you every step of the way. From working with tradespeople to sharing family-friendly home finds, I got you covered this year with my relaunch of my blog.

Got big home goals? Let’s start strong, with my first post.

My top 5 must-dos to kick off any home project.

1. Find Your Style

Start with a vision! Create a mood board (digital or physical) filled with images and words that capture the vibe you want for your home. This step is all about YOU. Your home should feel personal and reflect your unique style. Think of it as setting the tone for a space that makes you and your family happy every day.

2. Declutter First

You know the saying: “Let it go.” Clearing out the clutter gives you a clean slate to work with. Plus, a tidy space makes it so much easier to stay focused and inspired. Say goodbye to the old and make room for the new! Are you holding on to furnishings that you want or you feel you have to keep because some gave it to you? Wants should always be the answer!

3. Plan Your Layout

Grab some graph paper or try a free design app to sketch out your rooms. Functionality is key here—think about how your family will actually use the space. Make sure the furniture fits, traffic flows smoothly, and you’ve got storage where you need it. A well-thought-out layout is the foundation for everything else.

4. Invest Wisely

This one’s big! Knowing how much you want to invest in your project early on and break it down by category—furniture, decor, tradespeople, etc. Using a spreadsheet (Google Sheets, Excel) can help you stay organized and avoid surprises.

Investing in quality pieces is key because it saves you from constantly replacing them. Cheaper items might seem like a bargain, but they often end up costing more in the long run, since you have to replace them so much earlier.

5. Stick with a Process

Here’s where most people stumble—getting distracted by pretty little things (shiny object syndrome, anyone?). Suddenly, you’ve got a pile of accessories but no finished room. Instead, follow this process:

  1. Start with construction (if needed).
  2. Choose your furniture first upholstery, cabinets, tables.
  3. Then move on to rugs, windows, lighting, paint, art, and accessories in that order.

Sticking to a plan keeps you focused and saves you from costly mistakes.

A home isn’t just about how it looks. It’s about how it feels—for you, your family, and your life together. A great space brings comfort, joy, and memories.
