Questions To Ask When Hiring A Designer

So, let me ask you—are you struggling with having the home design you desire ?
Raise Your Hand!
When I was younger, I struggled in school. I often felt embarrassed and ashamed about it. One day, a teacher pulled me aside and said, “Karen, you have a choice—you can fail quietly or raise your hand and ask for help.” I told her, “Why would I want to embarrass myself by doing that?” She replied, “Because if you don’t, I won’t know you need help.” I decided to try it—and that semester, I pulled my failing grade up. That moment shifted everything for me. I’ve never been afraid to raise my hand since.
Thinking about hiring an interior designer, but not quite sure where to start?
You’re not alone. A lot of people hesitate to ask for help when it comes to their home. Whether it’s design, contractors, or other services, there’s often a little shame or fear of judgment attached. But let me say this clearly—there’s no shame in asking for help. Especially when it comes to your home, where style, function, and comfort really matter.
Interior Designers: What We Really Do.
Interior designers are trained problem solvers. We’re here to help you create a well-designed, functional home that works for how you live. We help you avoid costly mistakes, save time, and reduce stress. We’re not furniture salespeople or personal shoppers—we’re professionals who prioritize your goals and your lifestyle.

What to Ask Before You Hire
Decide What is Important – Start by listing what you want most out of the experience. I give my clients a list to rate, which helps me understand their priorities. Here are a few to think about: – Responsiveness, Speed of Completion, Level of Input, Budget, Final Result, The Overall Process.
Keep in mind: “budget-conscious” isn’t the same as “the cheapest.” And don’t just go with the person who’s available the fastest. The best ones are often booked out for a reason.
Know Your Budget – Be realistic about what you want to spend—not just on furnishings, but also on design fees (which are typically separate). Use your favorite online sources to research prices and get a sense of what things actually cost. Then, communicate those numbers to the designer to see if you’re aligned. Every designer has different project minimums and pricing models.
What Type of Services Do They Provide – Designers vary in how they work. Here are a few popular options Designers offer. Full Interior Design Service where the designer creates, manages, and installs a whole new space for you. Design Plans only where you can use the plan as a guide and implement the design yourself. Consulting to help you with problems you are having with your design. Not everyone offers all three. So, write down what you need, and check their website or ask questions to make sure they provide it.

Read Reviews – Take the time really read testimonials and reviews from past clients on their website, to see if what is said is in line with what you are expecting. If they are not provided, don’t be shy, ask if they can provide references.
Trust Your Gut – After your first call or meeting, ask yourself: Did I feel comfortable? Heard? Respected? If not, it’s okay to walk away. You need to trust the person you’re hiring, especially when something unexpected comes up (because it will). Take your time and meet with a few people if you need to.
Read the Contract – Before signing anything, slow down and review the details. Look at the scope of work, payment terms, and exactly what’s included. We’re all eager when starting a new project, but this is the time to ask questions. If something feels unclear or uncomfortable, speak up. If the answers don’t sit right with you, it’s okay to keep looking.
Bottom line:
Do your homework. Don’t be afraid to raise your hand. When you find the right fit, you’ll be glad you did. And when you do hire them—enjoy the process, and treat them well. A great working relationship goes a long way in creating a home you love.
