Family Friendly Friday – Boy’s Bedroom Decorating Dilemma

I recently had someone ask me this question and I thought I would share with you today my response and give some visual guidance with it.

My son is turning 12 and wants a more grown up room. I am really stuck on ideas and don’t want to have to change it again when he is in High School. Any suggestions?

Here is my answer to her…

Buying classics pieces from places like Pottery Barn, West Elm, or Crate and Barrel are great for transitioning.

Bedding that isn’t themed is always best Nautica has a great line that is well suited for boys of this age and older.

Quicksilver has a line of bedding  if he is the designer type.

Just going with fun solids like these from West Elm are a great option.

Color is where you can have the most fun since it is easy to change.
Here are a few of my favorites…
Benjamin Moore

Sherwin Williams

This is learned from experience. Trying to get your child’s room to be a magazine photo isn’t reality.  I feel that a child should have a say in some of the design aspects… especially with posters, photos, collectables and awards/trophies they have… Shelves are great and letting the posters and photos really cover the walls is what being a kid is all about.

Check out these photos for ideas…

Love the photos grouped on the wall tightly together. Have your son pick his favorite photos or take some for the wall…

My blog shares the very best of what I have learned about family-friendly design these past 18 years.
