Decorating Reality – Setting Expectations

There’s a fine line between dreaming up a well-designed home and bringing it to life. The reality? Every design project requires a balance of vision, time, and investment. Most importantly you should plan ahead for these bumps and set realistic goals

As an interior designer, I’ve seen firsthand how expectations shape the experience—for better or worse. The most successful projects happen when homeowners understand what’s possible within their space, budget, and timeline. So, let’s talk about setting realistic expectations to ensure your decorating journey is exciting, not frustrating.

Wants vs. Needs – The First Step in Every Project

When I first meet with clients, I create a list of wants and needs. Wants—what you think you want—and needs—what you actually need. This step helps streamline decisions and ensures that function and style work together.

Here are some examples:

  • Open shelving dreams vs. practical storage
You love the idea of open shelves but have nothing to display. Instead, opt for a mix—some open shelving for décor and closed storage underneath for items that don’t look great out in the open.

  • The unused exercise machine vs. a functional guest room
If you haven’t used that treadmill in two years and really need a comfortable space for visiting family and friends, it’s time to rethink priorities. Consider moving workouts outside and designing a guest room that actually serves its purpose.

  • The loveseat trap
A loveseat in the family room might seem like a good idea, but it’s not always the best for seating. It’s often uncomfortable and impractical for conversation. Before buying, think about how people will actually use the space. A floor plan helps, and so does paying attention to how seating works in homes you visit.

 Good Design Takes Time

You’ve probably seen a room transform in 45 minutes on TV, but real life doesn’t work that way. Custom furniture can take months, construction timelines shift, and even the simplest updates require planning. Patience is key, but the payoff is a home that truly works for your lifestyle.

Invest in Quality

Style and function go hand in hand, and quality matters when designing for everyday living. That means investing in pieces that not only look good but also stand up to the way you live. Setting a budget that aligns with your goals ensures that you get the best value—not just the lowest price.

Making Decisions with Confidence

Indecision is one of the biggest causes of project delays. A clear plan and trust in the process help things run smoothly. When you work with a designer, you’re not just hiring someone to make things look good; you’re gaining expertise to help you avoid costly mistakes and keep the project moving forward.

Flexibility is Your Friend

Design plans evolve. Sometimes the perfect fabric is discontinued, or a shipping delay means a backup plan is needed. Staying flexible and open to adjustments allows the process to keep moving without unnecessary stress.

Your Home Should Reflect You—Not Trends

Trends come and go, but your home should feel timeless and personal. Designing with your family’s needs in mind ensures a space that not only looks great but functions for your everyday life. That’s the difference between a home that’s staged for a magazine and one that truly works for you.

The Bottom Line? A Well-Designed Home is Worth the Process

Decorating should be exciting, not overwhelming. Setting realistic expectations from the start means fewer surprises and a more enjoyable journey to creating a home you love.
