Make Your Mark in 2019

2019 is starting out with quite a new outlook on things for me. In the past, I have done a word of the year and set resolutions. I realized I was just following the crowd, so I thought I would take a break in 2018 and really think about new ways to express myself on a social media and with my blogging. But 2018 turned out to be a year I will not forget – it was a year of my biggest lesson learned.

I wanted to share with you both the good and not so good. I hope it motivates you and I also want this out in the universe, so it is out there and motivates me to do what I want and need to do now.

The Good and The Not So Good

The good – 2018 was a wonderfully great year for my business I got to work with several wonderful clients. Clients that wanted me to help them have spaces that reflect them and who they are as a family. My business is really where I want it to be. I look forward to working with more families and helping them have those spaces that make them feel at home.

I decided towards the end of the year to take over some of my husband’s photos and submitted in two different minted challenges. I have to wait to put the photos up on my new print shop until we get the results for now. Win or lose it helped me see that I like having a few more things to offer with my Marker Girl brand and have some great new ideas in the works for our online store. Look for our launch very soon the of the print shop.

Now for the big lesson, I had quite a series of health hiccups this year. This has been ongoing for 10 years, in the past I would put a band-aid on it so to speak when I was feeling ok, I would go right back into the stressful lifestyle, with no exercise and lacking a really good diet. My challenge is hormonal (hormonal hell I will call it). I am one tough Mom, but I am not super Mom. In the fall, my body really screamed at me with frozen shoulders, anemia, and digestive challenges. Then after pouring money into so many functional options and none of them working, I found myself a few months ago at an acupuncturist. I had never gone to one and  I really didn’t want to do it. I ended up breaking down in this man’s office, and he looked at me at said “I want you to lay on the table and listen to the sounds from my music player and just breathe. I am not going to do anything with you today but let you relax”

I laid there thinking, “What the @#@^!  did I just pay for.” Then proceeded to breathe… Then I had this moment of clarity where I realized those years of worry and trying to be perfect for everyone had gotten me to this unhealthy point. I left relaxed that day and made the choice to finally start letting go of all that worry and to stop trying to be Super Mom, Super Designer, Super Karen.  I am working on a much better plan for self-care. So, this year is a year of change for me, one where my life needs to be less about resolutions and more about a big lifestyle change for my well-being.

Who is Marker Girl

People ask me quite often, “Who is Marker Girl?” Marker Girl was a name based from an incident that happened with my daughter markering the furniture over 12 years ago. What happened at that moment was life changing for me, it taught me how to approach designing my home, how to connect with the ideal clients in my business and being a better mom. How could that incident do that you ask? It made me see that I stopped being authentic before the incident and was trying to fit an idea of what designers houses should look like, and their businesses be like, that no one was happy around me including myself. After that incident, I really got it down with a very family friendly well-designed home, connecting with clients who wanted the same and being a Mom who had fun with her kids. But, now see I left my wellness out of it.

Make Your Mark

I am excited to announce that this year I am sharing my philosophy “Make Your Mark”. Make Your Mark, encourages Moms to express their own personal style and be imaginative, while living an authentic happy approach to life, at home with their families and in their business.

I will be relaunching my blog and social media with this philosophy in mind, with my “Make Your Mark” series for the home, your business, and lifestyle. Here is what you will see in 2019…

With Home Design I will be sharing with you how to “Make Your Mark” by creating the ultimate worry-free-family friendly home and show you how to achieve your own personalized look and style. I will have my latest design finds, guides and sharing recaps of my own client projects.

I am excited to bring to my entrepreneurial Moms. my “Make Your Mark” series all about how to stand out and be you in business. This past year has been my best year yet. I going to share my favorites tips and tools for getting those ideal clients and selling yourself.

Finally, I will be sharing how I am making my own mark with my lifestyle, by sharing with journal updates that include more about this journey of wellness, with some favorite recipes and products that are helping me achieve a healthier balance to my life.

Happy Everything! Karen
